Kilimanjaro – Flashback – 2011 – Moshi

After an 8 hour flight from London > Kenya and a connecting 30-40 minute flight from Kenya to the aptly named Kilimanjaro airport, we had arrived in Tanzania!

Summit from plane

We had only been on the ground for maybe 10 minutes when the drama started, we were asked pretty much when we got through the door to show the Yellow Fever vaccination certificate………Me and a few others were under the impression that this particular vaccination was not required (just advised) so of course we had no certificate to show…I’m not gonna lie, a little bit of panic set in, will they let us through or send us back??

Luckily, I somehow managed to convince them that my certificate was safely tucked away in my main luggage and was thankfully allowed through.  However, the others were a little more honest than me and confessed that they didn’t have said certificate. After a lot of negotiations from within a little back room and the help of Tunzo our tour guide, they thankfully managed to avoid having the injection there and then and got away with paying their way out of the situation! Funny how when money is offered, the issue quickly went away…..

So anyway, we finally reached our hotel / lodges.

After a quick freshen up, we went to visit a local school to deliver some books that were donated back in the UK.  It was an experience I will never forget, there were so many kids for such a small school, I think around 100 pupils per class!  They treated us to some songs and dancing, which was incredibly emotional..(for me, any kids that sing make me cry).

After the school, we headed to a local restaurant for our last supper, exhausted, we headed back to the hotel and on the way to our individual lodges, we caught a glimpse of Mt Kilimanjaro….
