Cycling in the Lake District
Stunning views, breath-taking landscapes and miles of well-established routes. The cycle trails in and around The Lake District rival some of the best in the world.
A firm favourite for both visitors and locals alike is the Lakes & Dales Loop, a 196-mile circular route that covers some of the most beautiful areas ofthe Lake District. It’s perfect for all abilities whether you’re a seasoned professional or a beginner to the bike, you can simply pick your own bite-sized section of the track and get going!
There arehowever more challenging routes up and around the fells which are suited for only the most seasoned of athletes. From tear-jerking inclines of 33% and elevations up to 426m, these road sections are not for the faint hearted. The likes of the Honister Pass, Home to the Tour of Britain in years past, and The Struggle set the gauntlet for road-cyclists and are now a must-ride for every cyclist’s bucket list.
For those who fancy trying their hand at off-road cycling the MTB trails of Whinlatter (England’s only true mountain forest) bring their own challenges. There are both moderate and difficult routes run from Cyclewise (the local, very well-provisioned mountain bike centre) and experienced cyclists can attack the Altura trail which has tough single track sections, jumps and table tops amongst other features, the perfect red grade route.
