Driving into the Heart of the Peak District

During our camping weekend with the Subaru XV, we were asked to go have an adventure!  So we loaded the car up with rucksacks, drinks, snacks and wet weather gear (although looked like a sunny day, you can never be too careful!) and drove into the heart of the Peak District.

First stop was Castleton…

Castleton is a lovely village surrounded by hills, we parked up at the Information Centre which is worth a quick look around as it also doubles up as the village museum, with artifacts dating back to prehistoric times.

We then headed up towards the Castle that looks over the village.  Peveril Castle was built in 1086 for William Peverel, a favoured knight of William the Conqueror.

As part of the English Heritage sites, there is a charge to get into the castle followed by a small hill walk.

The view from here back down to Castleton is great…

After some exploring around the ruins, we headed back down into Castleton for a quick lunch and then we decided to take a drive further into the hills to see what we could find.

Finding a small cave…

Next up we headed up Winnats Pass, a lovely winding road up into the hills, pretty soon we found ourselves near Mam Tor and seeing some people walking up their, the boys finally showed an interest in walking up a hill!

So we parked up and found the easily marked path and headed up.

It was an easy walk which took about 30 mins, but the boys were so pleased to have reached the top and the view was amazing.

We finished off the day with a campfire, this time in a proper firepit!
