How to Liven Up Family Dinners

If you have to do something, then you may as well make it as enjoyable as possible. After all, if you view it as a chore, then you’ll only be causing yourself misery. You can think what you want about things that you don’t have to do, but those compulsory tasks? It’s best to find a way to make them fun.

Take, for example, your evening family dinner. While there’ll be some evenings when you just want to warm up some leftovers or prepare a simple meal for you and your loved ones, as a default it’s best to approach the task with a positive mindset.

So how can you do that? In this blog, we’ll take a look at some handy tips that may just have you looking forward to getting in the kitchen and sharing a lovely meal with your family.

Recruit Help

It’s always fun when you have company. If you’re the only one in the kitchen, then it’ll be understandable if you begin to dread dinnertime. The solution? Recruit some help! Your children, unless they’re very young, will be able to do something, even if it’s just washing the vegetables. You’ll be happy to have some help, and they’ll be learning a good life lesson in the process. It’s a win-win scenario.

Try New Recipes

You’ll likely have a bunch of recipes that you make over and over again. However, while it’s good to have some go-to recipes, it’s important to keep in mind that, after a while, this can just put you on autopilot. You’re just going through the motions when you make recipes you can make blindfolded. At least once a week, look at trying a new recipe. You’ll be excited to get into the kitchen if you know you have a new curry or baked ziti recipe for dinner tonight. Plus, you’ll be diversifying your cooking skills, which can be highly rewarding. You won’t knock every dish out of the park, but from time to time you’ll make a delicious dish that quickly becomes a new staple.

Make a Theme

Another way to make dinnertime more fun is to have a theme. For example, you could try cuisine from all around the world. If you love going to Mexican restaurants, then why not consider creating a Mexican menu from the comfort of your own home? You can even make some non-alcoholic Mexican cocktails to serve before dinner or play Mexican music while you cook. This helps to make things more interesting, and in the process, you’ll also be exposing your children to new cultures. There’s no shortage of awesome cuisines from around the world!

Dinner Conversation

If you’re going to go to great lengths to cook up a storm, then it’s important to take the time to really honour the meal that you’ve made. And you can’t do that if you’re just absent-mindedly eating the food while you watch television. Those evenings should be the exception, not the rule. Instead, look at all sitting down and really being present during meal time. Coming together in the evening is a great time for engaging conversations, so take a look at some classic questions to ask during dinnertime. If you don’t want to go too deep, then you can just ask everyone what has been their favourite part of the day — more often than not, it’ll be the springboard for a fascinating conversational journey.

Summertime Is For Eating Outside

There’s no law that says you need to have every meal at the dinner table. If the sun is shining and it’s a beautiful day, why not take your food outside and enjoy a great summertime meal? For this, you’ll likely need to invest in some yard furniture, but once you’ve got it, you’ll be having great dinnertime all summer long. You can make the meal in your kitchen and just eat the food outside, or you can invest in a BBQ and look up some tasty BBQ recipes. Everyone remembers meals that they eat outside on a pleasant summer’s evening.

Make It an Event

Finally, from time to time you can look at making dinner time an event. This means that you go above and beyond to really make the meal special. You could prepare the dining table so that it’s restaurant-worthy, create a special multicourse meal, and get the whole family to dress up as if they were going to a fancy establishment. It’s suitable for birthdays and special occasions, but you can also do it just because you want to!
