Keeping Fit and Exercises for Seniors

Keeping fit and healthy is important for all ages, but perhaps more so when you hit the senior years. Keeping your bones and muscles in good condition can help reduce the risk of falls and bone breakages.

Exercising and keeping a healthy lifestyle is beneficial when started young, however if you’re new to exercises when older then it’s never too late to start.

Exercises for seniors can be as simple as a gentle walk around your local area, walking to the shops or even joining the local gym. There are many ways to keep fit and even if you have mobility problems, there are aids available to keep you moving from places like Age UK Mobility.

Exercising can also help boost mood and energy levels, helps keep you social and improves brain function.

Sometimes it can be a little daunting joining an exercise class or walking group for the first time, but once you’ve made that first step, all those worries should disappear.

Here are some exercises for seniors that are a great start into a new health lifestyle:

Walking

Walking is such a great way to get fit, it’s low impact on your joints and it can be done anywhere. All you need to do is open the front door and go! If you struggle with mobility then keeping to streets where trip hazards are lower is recommended, but if you have the option to explore further afield then there are some great low level walks around the UK, which are again low impact but come with great views. Their are many resources available online to help you find suitable walks, but another great option is to join a local walking group. They are likely to be found all over the country, in cities too. This is a perfect way to get out, get active and socialise at the same time. The benefits of walk therefore are vast and should definitely be utilised.

Exercise Classes for Seniors

Exercise classes are available for everyone, and especially seniors. You will find classes especially adapted for the older person and thus making sure you follow routines tailored for you. Some great exercise classes to look into are:

Yoga / Pilates – Great for building core strength, stretching muscles and increasing flexibility. Both exercises are slow controlled movements and mostly are done in a seated or lying position.

Walking Football – A great social exercise, that is at a faster pace but still suited for the older person. Walking football is becoming more widely available so you should be able to find one in your local area.

Dancing – From Latin to Ballroom, dancing is a great activity practiced solo or with your partner. It’s perfect for memory and brain function, remembering all the moves and is a great mood booster.

Keeping fit and healthy in your senior years really is something you shouldn’t delay, the sooner you get moving and keeping a healthier lifestyle the better you will feel both physically and mentally.
