Planning A Weekend in Devon With The Kids

Holidays abroad are incredibly exciting, but it’s hard to deny the stress involved in planning and at times grappling with different languages – sometimes it’s best to appreciate what’s on your doorstep. Devon has historically been one of the most popular holiday destinations in Britain, with beautiful scenery and beaches which are perfect for days out with the kids. Load up the car, book your hotel, and enjoy some itinerary inspiration.

The Big Sheep

Starting off with the weird and wonderful, the winner of last year’s award for Devon’s largest attraction is the Big Sheep, a delightful theme park and fun fair with Sheep themed entertainment for all ages. There are shearing shows, a petting zoo, sheep racing, sheepdog trials, a vintage carousel, or catch the train from ‘Eweston’ station. Older kids will love the laser quest or climbing wall, and if you need a rest you can relax at the on-site brewery or a proper Devon cream tea at the restaurant.

Dartmoor Countryside

If you’d rather embrace some of our home-grown rugged beauty, there are a huge range of sites to choose from in Dartmoor. The area was the setting for Sherlock and Watson’s adventure in ‘Hound of the Baskervilles,’ and provided the film location for Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. Tamar Valley is a great area to enjoy an afternoon cycling the hills, or visiting the Mining museum which documents some of the region’s mining history and is designated a UNESCO heritage site.

Blackpool Sands

It wouldn’t be an English staycation if a trip to the seaside weren’t included, and Blackpool Sands is one of the more unusual beaches in the country. In this area, the English Channel takes on a beautiful turquoise colour making it all the more inviting. With rolling green hills behind, this really is one of the best beaches – and you can even try your hand at kayaking in the waves, with classes available.

Arlington Court

Budding historians will love exploring the house, grounds, and gardens of aristocratic Arlington Court. Filled with treasures from the 19th century onwards, the stables even house the spectacular Speaker’s State coach. There is plenty to make it interesting for younger children as well, including a secret garden trail which families can follow and spot all the wonderful plants and wildlife (including peacocks and deer) together, and take a break at one of the many play areas.
