Sleeping Tips When Travelling

Either by travelling by plane, car or train, quite often you may find yourself travelling at times when you’d rather be tucked up in your bed!  Or if you have kids and have a 5 hr drive ahead then anything you can do to encourage them to sleep for part of the journey is going to make those 5 hrs a little bit more bearable than hearing “are we there yet” or “I feel sick” every 10 minutes.

Bed and Mattress retailer Bed Guru got in touch to ask for my best sleeping tips as part of their #sleepanywhere campaign and also sent me a goodie bag to help on those future journeys!

Here’s what I do to try to help me (and the kids) to sleep anywhere:

Neck Pillows

J Pillow

You see them in the service stations when you refuel your energy, but how many of you actually go ahead and buy one?  Last year on a car trip to Devon I made the decision to buy two for the kids to help make the long car journey a little bit more comfortable and to try to encourage them to sleep for a little while.  The J Pillow that I was sent in my goodie bag however looks loads better than the standard u-shaped ones you buy, it even has a chin rest to stop those embarrassing head drops mid-sleep 🙂

Eye Masks

Eye Mask

These are especially handy on flights to help get some sleep.  I like eye masks as for me sleeping on a plane is incredibly hard and I always feel a little self-conscious, but with an eye mask it psychologically makes me more relaxed to try to drop off regardless of what anyone else is doing.

Ear Plugs

Ear Plugs

As essential bit of kit for plane and train journeys where you can absolutely guarantee to be sitting near to the loudest and chattiest people ever!  Combining ear plugs with an eye mask you’re almost ready to make that step into dreamsville.

Dependent on the scenario, who I’m with etc, how long the flight is etc, I have also taken herbal sleeping pills to help get me to relax on the plane, especially if I know I’m going to hit the ground running upon landing, I like to be as refreshed as can be.

I don’t tend to fall asleep when the kids are travelling with me of course, unless I can strap them both to me so I know if they move 🙂
