Whether you’re moving to accommodate your growing family or upgrading to an energy-efficient new build home, taking proactive steps will make all the difference.

Below, we share some tips to help you prepare for your big move.

Start Planning Early

Good planning is the foundation of a successful house move. As soon as you know your moving date, create a timeline to map out key tasks like hiring movers, transferring utilities, and notifying schools or employers of your change of address. A detailed house-moving checklist will help you stay on track and prevent last-minute scrambles.

Set aside time for decluttering, as well. There’s no sense in bringing unwanted or unused things to your new home. Involve the whole family in sorting through belongings – you might be surprised at how much easier it is to let go when everyone contributes.

Have a Packing Strategy

Packing can feel like an endless chore but breaking it down into manageable steps makes the process more manageable. Start with things you don’t use daily, such as seasonal clothing or décor. Label every box clearly with its contents and destination room, as this will make unpacking much easier.

Invest in quality packing materials to protect fragile items, and remember to pack heavier belongings at the bottom of boxes to prevent them from crushing other stuff at the bottom.

Equip Yourself for Moving Day

The big day can be chaotic, so preparation is key. Ensure you have some basic toolbox essentials for dismantling furniture, plenty of bin bags for rubbish, and snacks and drinks to keep everyone fuelled.

Double-check that your moving company or helpers know the schedule and routes, and keep a phone charger handy so you can stay connected in case of delays or emergencies. Being ready for these practicalities will allow you to focus on the transition itself.

Carry First Night Necessities

The first night in your new place is always a bit disorienting, so pack a bag of essentials for every family member. Include toiletries, pyjamas, a change of clothes and any medications. If your children are young, pack nappies, formula or comfort items like favourite toys.

Having everything you need within reach saves you from rummaging through boxes late at night.

With a bit of thoughtful organisation, you can ensure the move goes smoothly and even enjoy the transition into your new space. By staying organised and approaching each stage with a clear plan, your family can settle into your new home quickly, ready to create happy memories together.
