Cledan Valley Camping – Review

This is a detailed review of Cledan Valley Camping in Mid Wales.

Cledan Valley is located in the Powys region of Mid Wales.  A remote campsite offering bell tents, yurts and shepherd huts in a rural setting.  Taking you into the heart of nature, Cledan Valley is a chance to switch off and fully immerse yourself into the wild.

Location

Cledan Valley is in a rural setting surrounded by hills and streams, tucked away from the road to allow you to get fully back to nature.

Carno is a short drive away and your nearest place with a spar and pub.  Fashion and furnisher Laura Ashley and her husband are buried in Carno church.  Cledan Valley is perfectly situated to visit a number of places in mid-Wales, here are a few options within an hour:

Camp site and services

Cledan Valley has a variety of facilities on site within a short walking distance of your accommodation.   Parking is in a small car park (layby) before the site, there’s a wheelbarrow to help you transport all your stuff!

The Lodge

The Lodge is great for when you have kids or there’s a larger group of people.  Complete with sofas and games and fire-pits.  Here you’ll also find additional cooking utensils.

Toilet and showers

There are a couple of toilets available on site with lighting.  The toilets and showers were clean and well stocked with toilet paper/soap etc.  One of the toilets is a self-composting toilet which is always a fun one to show children 🙂

You’ll also find washing facilities, logs and rubbish bins here.

Although there is no electricity on site, the lodge and the toilets/showers do have lighting.  Phone signal is available in certain areas of the site.

Treasure Hunt

There are three different treasure hunts available, all can be found in The Lodge.  We opted for the adults, though we found it quite hard and in the end enlisted one of the helpful children to help us!  This was a really good way to spend a few hours, wandering around the site.

Access

Despite the remote location, Cledan Valley does offer disabled access in the Red Kite Yurt and the toilet/shower facilities are equipped for disabled users.

Bell Tent and Amenities

We stayed in the Otter bell tent which is in a more secluded part of the site.  A short walk from the toilets/lodge and no cut through for others so is relatively private.

The bell tents can fit up to 6 people.  Inside a two double beds and a futon, a chest full of cooking equipment and a cool box.  A small lantern and solar lighting are there, but it’s worth bringing your own torch if you need to go toilet in the night!  Bedding isn’t typically provided, but you can request this for an additional charge.

There isn’t a wood stove, though we were perfectly warm throughout the night.

Outside the tent you have a small covered kitchen area with gas bbq and picnic bench.  Next to this there’s a fire pit area and a small shelter, perfect for kids to sit and roast marshmallows!  Also two wooden sun loungers are available.

The Otter bell tent is right next to the Cledan river and whilst we could hear it, we unfortunately couldn’t see it from the tent.  It would have been amazing to have been able to fully see the river.  You can however walk to a different part of the site and see the river more easily.

Food

Its typical when camping to bring your own food and drink.  There is however an option to have a breakfast hamper.  This was in the tent on our arrival and included:

Bacon, Sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, bread, eggs, milk, butter, honey, coffee, teabags, sugar.

All locally sourced and of really great quality.  The quantity for us (two) was enough to last for the two mornings we were there.

Every day we were given a fresh ice pack to keep everything at a suitable temperature.

Currently the breakfast hamper is £15

Also available is afternoon tea for two, cupcakes and Prosecco.

Feedback

We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay at Cledan Valley, Russ and Karen (and kids) were the perfect hosts.  We were able to join them on feeding the llamas and they were always at the end of the phone if we needed anything, though they have thought of everything!  The location was ideal and the views were amazing.

The perfect place to disconnect the phones and reconnect with nature and each other.

We stayed for two nights in the Otter Bell Tent which is currently priced at £60 per night (minimum stay 2 nights)
