Could window shutters be the answer?

I haven’t done many home style posts as yet on here (mainly because I’ve got so much travel stuff to get out!) but that’s not to say that there won’t be more in the future…especially once the travel ones are done and dusted!  So here’s the first of many to come 😉

We moved to a much bigger house in September last year and are very slowly decorating to our tastes…the couple that lived here before had a very strong desire for flocked wallpaper (and painted wallpaper!) and slowly slowly we’re getting it down.   It’s not horrific and it’s liveable so for now as money settles we will update each room as and when possible.

This is our first summer here and as I work from home and have the boys to look after during the school holidays I’ve been trying to find the best solution to base myself and my laptop.  Normally my office is upstairs, however due to the constant yelling from the bottom of the stairs of  ‘I’m hungry’ or ‘can you put a DVD on?’ I got a bit fed up strutting up and down the stairs!…although good training :-).  Currently my solution is to base myself in the dining room as it’s within easy access to the living room and the kitchen and I can see pretty much the whole garden if the boys want to play out there during the day.

Ideally though,  there’s a great spot in the Garden Room that has an in-built desk and is lovely and warm in the summer (the dining room is dark and has no external windows as it backs onto the garden room)….sadly after a few attempts of working at the desk in the garden room, I found that the light was just to bright and the glare on the laptop was just too fierce.

This is when I’ve started to look into blinds, as it’s a garden room, it has a large window and a glass roof (very much like a conservatory).  Not having much experience with buying blinds I started searching on the web, I’ve come across a site called Thomas Sanderson, who offer a wide range of window shutters that suit any type and style of house….much better than the husbands suggestion of office style blinds with those metal beaded chains that tangle at every opportunity!  After having a good old scout on the website I’ve found some lovely hand-crafted wooden shutters which can be designed to any bespoke style of your wish, and being an odd size window, the flexibility of them being made to fit would come in pretty handy.

So that’s the main window sorted, I just need to decide on the roof blinds and then come next summer I should have a lovely office space ready for when the weather warms up next year!  Never have I been so excited about blinds! 🙂
